The Haight

So for some reason I had the pre conceived notion I was going to a have nice relaxing Vinyasa flow last night, boy was I wrong.  It was an intense 90-minute class and they kept the room so hot it was almost like hot yoga.  I was in a turtleneck and pants 😰, it was brutal.  After yoga Kylie and I got a quick bite to eat at this trendy rooftop Mexican restaurant, it hit the spot for sure.

I slept like a baby and woke up expecting to take the trolley towards Lombard St. and see where the day took me but when I started looking up tours to Alcatraz and saw they were booked until forever, I saw a walking tour through Haight/Ashburg called "Flower Power" today starting in 30 minutes, I was in.

The tour guide was Stan Fluoride (his artist name) from Bayville, NJ living in SF since '82, he was a medic in the War.  The tour mostly focused on the "Hippie Movement" in that area and what Haight/Ashbury has meant to the city of San Francisco.  I learned a lot about that the history of the area and the word 'hipster', 'hippie', and 'jazz'.  I got to see Charles Manson, Janis Joplin, Hell Angels, and the Grateful Dead houses.  I saw where "Sugar Magnolia" got its inspiration from a woman named Magnolia Pussycat who owned a corner restaurant, which is now Magnolia Brew Pub and sells beers called, 'Weather Report Wheat'.

I walked around most of the afternoon checking out the different shops, walking through golden gate park.  I stopped into Magnolia Brew Pub and was talking to some people about my travels.  As it turned out, they worked at Genentech.  If I do decide to move to the Bay Area I would have lots of connections with Genentech and that is the big pharmaceutical company everybody works for out here.

Song of the day "Me and Bobby McGee" Janis Joplin.  Janis Joplin was one of musicians living in San Francisco during the hippie movement.  I did get to see her pink house on my tour today.
